David Taylor, CEO, Adriatic Luxury Hotels, Croatia

Introducing David Taylor: A Visionary Leader in Hospitality

In our latest interview, we have the pleasure of sitting with David Taylor, the CEO of Adriatic Luxury Hotels in Croatia. With his unparalleled expertise and innovative mindset, David has revolutionized the luxury hospitality landscape, propelling Adriatic Luxury Hotels to new heights of success and excellence.

In the interview, we'll delve into David's personal experiences in human resources challenges, emerging trends in hospitality, the perspectives of new generations, and his unique journey of working and living in Croatia.

David, as a leader in the hospitality industry, you've undoubtedly encountered various human resources challenges. Could you share a particularly memorable experience that taught you valuable lessons in managing and nurturing your team?

Yes, in my early career I was part of a fairly large hotel company  sales team, and one of the team had a terrible year. Everyone was fairly sure the Sales Director at the time, who had a reputation for being very tough, would terminate his contract and let him go. Surprisingly, he was retained. The next year, he was outstanding. We later found out that he was struggling in his personal life, I won’t go into why, but he had kept it to himself whilst he tried to battle on at work. Instead of firing him, the Sales Director helped him in his personal and professional life. It paid off for years afterwards. It made me realise that stepping back, getting better perspectives, and asking the right questions, can have profoundly positive benefits.

In the ever-evolving world of hospitality, new trends continue to shape the guest experience. From your vantage point, what emerging trends do you find most intriguing, and how do you see them shaping the future of luxury hotels in Croatia?

I think by now it is fairly clear that understanding the needs of our guests and anticipating them is more critical than ever. Hotels are getting much better at this, and continued advancements in data management, analytics, and increasing use of artificial intelligence are likely to make this significantly easier whilst at the same time making hotel management and operations much more efficient, leading to more enhanced guest experiences.

Best Stay Event aims to bridge the gap between seasoned professionals and the younger generation entering the hospitality industry. How do you perceive the perspective and aspirations of these new generations, and what steps have you taken to integrate their fresh ideas and enthusiasm into your organization?

It seems to me that there is a generational misunderstanding at times. Seasoned professionals are exactly that, gaining knowledge and experience of many, many years, through good times and bad, whereas the younger generation is on a mission to progress quickly, they have invention, aspirations, dreams and ideas, and rightly so.

The two perspectives don’t always go together, unless they learn from each other. ALH are very engaged with educational establishments, through scholarships and other initiatives to bring through the next generation, increase their skills, and implement their ideas.

Croatia, with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has become a sought-after destination for both travelers and professionals. As someone who has had the privilege of working and living in Croatia, what aspects of the country and its people have resonated with you on a personal level? How has this influenced your approach to leading Adriatic Luxury Hotels?

It truly is a privilege to work and live in Croatia.  I’ve been made to feel very welcome, and I find that most people are very warm, and helpful and are naturally generous with their hospitality. That’s something I always encourage in ALH.

I also like the directness of Croatian communication, it works for me, and I have encouraged open and direct communication. It helps avoid surprises, and it brings a sense of clarity and purpose to the business.

We really appreciate David for sharing his awesome insights and personal experiences with us.

His wisdom and amazing journey in the hospitality industry, along with his take on challenges in human resources, the latest trends, collaborating with different generations, and the irresistible charm of Croatia, always leave the audience with plenty to think about.

We can't wait to hear more from him on the panel in November at Zonar Zagreb.
